The Trifid Nebula

Description
So named because of its three lobed appearance, this nebula is a combination of the two basic tyupes: a blue reflection nebula, where dust scatters the stars' blue light, and an emission nebula where hydrogen gas is excited to glow reddish from the ultraviolet light of nearby hot young stars. The 'lobes' are in fact dark dust lanes that run through the nebula and in FRONT of it giving the appearance that it is split three ways. In fact these lanes are somewhat between us and the bright nebula behind them.
